#13for2013 #5 'Opposites Attract'

So... 'Opposites Attract'. Really wasn't sure how best to interpret this months theme so have decided to take it fairly literally . I must admit it that when I first perused this months playlist brief, for some inexplicable reason, the first thing that came into my head was the atrocious pair of singles 'Fuck you' (I don't want you back) by Eamonn and the equally witty retort of 'F U right back' by Frankee. What a duo of musical abominations they were. They shall not be making my list!

Opposites are important because they give meaning to each other. Without their opposite, words are far more difficult to define. And usually opposites have one perceived positive and negative. I've tried to find songs that support this idea but question it as well.

Band of Skulls - Light of the Morning
The Blasters - Dark Night (ignore the fact it says 'Knight' on spotify, it's wrong!)

'Light of the Morning' is the opening song from Band of Skulls debut album and gets it off to a thumping start. The second is on the soundtrack to Tarantino film 'From Dusk til Dawn' and features in the opening credits, and as the closing credits role and it's revealed that the Titty Twister strip club is built on a ludicrously large Aztec temple. If you haven't seen the film I recommend it! Obviously, the opposition of Light and Dark is pretty clean cut, going to 'the dark side' and 'seeing the light' being two phrases that demonstrate how these words are commonly used.

This brings me onto 3 & 4

REM - Daysleeper
Razorlight - Up All Night

I liked these song titles because they are both about what you aren't expected to do at that time of the day. Though if you work the night shift replenishing the shelves at Tesco then these songs probably sum up your day to day existence quite succinctly!

5 & 6

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
AC/DC - Highway to Hell

Two Rock heavyweights here showing us how to get to various fictional places. Personally, I think if you've been good all your life and have warranted a place in 'heaven' then you deserve a more pleasurable journey than stairs. An escalator at the very least. And though they don't go into specifics about the 'Highway to Hell' (apart from saying there is no speed limit or stop signs) I can only imagine that it is riddled with potholes, roadkill and severe delays for essential road maintenance between Junction 12 and the M4...

7 & 8

Phoenix - North
Grizzly Bear - Southern Point

They are at opposite ends of a compass. Don't get more opposite than that motherfuckers!

9 & 10

Edwin Starr - War
Weezer - Peace

One of the opposites that plagues the world on a daily basis. Ironically, Edwin Starr's 'War' is a bloody classic, always reminding me of the original series of Gladiators in the 90's and film 'Rush Hour' whereas 'Peace', though not terrible, is a weak effort from the Weezer boys when you compare it to their earlier work.

11 & 12

One opposite I haven't delved into is love and hate so the final two songs I have picked are... wait for it... a song I love and a song I HATE. I'll let you decide which is which...

Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
Michael Buble - Haven't Met You Yet

Thanks for reading, and sorry for picking two songs that aren't on Spotify forcing you to listen to lame covers!
